Discover the way to wellbeing
(pssst… it’s this way) ...
Find the secret to wellbeing and you’ve surely found the modern-day Holy Grail of peace, happiness and health - but how often do our busy lives divert us in the wrong direction? Can making small changes really result in big outcomes and a stronger sense of what you really need? We think so! Try our quick tips to increasing your overall wellbeing:
1. Know ‘your happy’
With so much advice on what you should be doing to help you feel great, it’s easy to forget that you are the best person to know what really works for you. With a growing body of science to back up that little pockets of joy enhance both our energy and our wellbeing, why not give it a go? Whether it’s a meaningful conversation, a cat purring on your lap, or watching the rain hit the window panes with a cup of tea - you know deep down what restores you. So forget the fads and listen in:
- Close your eyes and ask yourself what moments truly give you that sunshine feeling on the inside
- Write them down until you have a list of seven
- Try a different one each day and see how you feel after a week
2. Swap screen time for nature
Nature has a powerful way of focusing us to enjoy the present moment. It’s well known that being in nature has been found to have a restorative impact on our brains and bodies - reducing anxiety while boosting our attention spans, creativity and our ability to connect with others. Screen time on the other hand, can result in structural changes in the brain from decreased happiness levels, to higher agitation, trouble sleeping and issues concentrating - the evidence is growing for the case that we should decrease our screen time if we want to optimise our wellbeing. Of course, in today’s digital society, we can’t just swap screens for idyllic days out in the wilds, but small changes can have a significant impact on our stress levels and sleep quality. Take a step outside:
- Start to notice and tune into how screen time really makes you feel, is it a genuine need to pick up your smartphone or a low-level addiction?
- Avoid screen time for an hour before bed and an hour after waking, this allows your brain to wind down and re-awaken without the over stimulation of blue light
- Take a full lunch break with a fifteen minute walk in a green space if you can
- Leave your phone at home one day a week and incorporate some nature time, notice any technology cravings, but also how it feels to know no one can disturb you - follow that feeling
3. Think of others
With such busy lives, it’s easy to forget about others, although we may not be inherently selfish, it can mean we overlook when we otherwise might care, and miss out on the feel-good factor of going that extra mile for others. Plus, science appears clear on this: helping others boosts our health, our happiness and possibly even our longevity.
- Try doing one thing for someone else without needing thanks (it doesn’t have to be a big gesture - buying a homeless person a cup of tea, asking someone how they are and genuinely meaning it when you ask, giving up your seat on the train), notice how it feels, do you have more energy? How is your mood afterwards?
- Notice when others are kind to you, small gestures or smiles, see how it feels
- Practice the Aura-Soma ‘Peace To All Beings’ meditation, as by discovering the peace within us we can extend this peace to all
May all being be well and happy and free from fear, from the smallest cell to the largest galaxy in space.
May all beings come to know comfort and ease throughout all times and space.
Peace to all beings.
4. Feed your body happy
We’ve heard it before: you are what you eat! In the same way that we know what feeds our soul, we can also tune into what really feeds our body. Just as ‘no one size fits all’ and a yo-yo mentality of deprivation or following the latest insta fad can leave us depleted, tuning in and eating consciously in a way that feeds our bodies and gives back to the earth can mean increased energy, health and mental clarity. Try these top tips:
- Take a class or buy a book on mindful eating to develop the art of presence when you eat, this ancient practice can transform the way you eat for life
- Eat foods in their most natural and least processed form, such as foods grown organically or biodynamically, to extract the most amount of goodness
- Get creative with plant-based cooking to boost energy and reduce your consumption of animal products, it doesn’t have to be an overhaul - just one vegan day a week can give a sluggish system a mini reboot and inspire other mealtimes.
5. Develop a regular wellbeing practice
Committing to a regular mind-body practice helps us realise our potential, calms our nervous system, reduces inflammation and boosts our emotional endurance. Meditation and yoga are both credited for potentially lowering the risk of dementia, heart disease and cancer, as well as boosting longevity and increasing our kindness levels - so what’s not to embrace?
Whether it’s yoga, meditation, tai chi, dance or simply going for a mindful walk - take your regular practice to the next level by combining it with daily use of your chosen Equilibrium, activated once applied to the body the vibrational energy will help you achieve a deeper level of consciousness and self-understanding.
